How many beers can I drink during a round of golf?

Many golfers enjoy having a drink or two while playing a round of golf. It's this ability to enjoy a cold beer while playing that makes golf a favorite summertime activity for many people.

It's not a crime to enjoying a beer or two while playing a round of golf. However, it's important to keep in mind how much you can safely drink before becoming intoxicated on your drive home.

The legal BAC limit in Indiana is .08. How much you can drink depends partly on your sex, weight and how much you've eaten. Having said that, there are general estimates you can use to help you know whether you've had one too many.

When thinking about these estimates, some assumptions need to be made. It is assumed that the 18 holes will take 4 hours to complete. Each beer you're drinking is 12 ounces and has an alcohol content of 4.5%.

The data for these estimates come from the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission.

Men

  • A 160-pound man could have no more than five beers
  • A 200-pound man could have no more than seven beers
  • A 240-pound man could have no more than eight beers

Women

  • A 120-pound woman could have no more than three beers
  • A 160-pound woman could have no more than four beers
  • A 200-pound woman could have no more than five beers

It's important to treat these numbers as rough estimates. Every person's body processes alcohol differently. If you don't feel up to driving, make sure you have a way to get home safely.

Receiving an OWI on your drive home from the course can carry significant consequences, including fines and jail time. Planning ahead to know what your limit is will help you avoid the negatives of an OWI conviction.
